WorkSafebC reports 2 workplace fatalities in Q1 2025

WorkSafeBC reported two fatalities related to workplace incidents during the first three months of 2025.

One worker died and another suffered serious injuries when the vehicles of two delivery drivers were involved in a motor vehicle incident, according to the provincial safety regulator. The incident occurred in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia.

Another worker died in February in Northern B.C.

Although the exact details remain unclear, WorkSafeBC noted that the worker had been performing tasks underneath a low-bed equipment trailer when “a loud bang was heard.” The worker was found unresponsive and did not survive.

In addition to the fatalities, several other workers sustained injuries in separate incidents across the province.

In one case, a worker suffered a head injury while operating a boom lift approximately 20 feet above the ground. The worker set down a cordless drill and moved the lift sideways. The drill fell from the platform and struck another worker on the ground.

In another incident, a worker was conducting overhead electrical work from a rolling scaffold system when the system began to move. While leaning over, the worker fell from the platform, landing on concrete 6.5 to 7.5 feet below and sustaining multiple injuries.

Two workers also sustained multiple injuries while installing drywall from a temporary elevated work platform. The platform failed, and both workers fell approximately 18 feet to grade level.

Meanwhile, a young worker sustained fractures and lacerations while assembling an off-highway tire and rim assembly without the use of a protective cage or other restraining device. The worker was inflating the tire to seat the lock ring when the tire exploded from the rim. The explosion caused the tire to strike the worker and also caused the hammer they were using to hit them as well.

Another incident involved a worker who sustained a fracture while inspecting a travelling bridge crane from a scissor lift. As the crane moved away from the lift, its rigging caught the lift, causing it to tip over. The worker jumped out, struck nearby equipment, and fell to the ground.
