Alberta OHS investigating incident in Chestermere, east of Calgary
A construction worker lost his life in Chestermere, Alberta after a significant fall at a residential construction site over the weekend. Emergency responders rushed to the scene in the 200 block of Chelsea Road on Sunday, November 26th, after receiving reports of the incident.
Stuart Brideaux, EMS public education officer, explained the situation to Postmedia, saying, "Emergency services were alerted by another co-worker on the job site who had found their co-worker injured from an apparent fall, although the entire incident was unwitnessed."
The worker, identified as an adult male, suffered serious, life-threatening injuries as a result of the fall. He was immediately transported by ground ambulance to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. The severity of his injuries was such that there were considerations to airlift him to the hospital, but unfortunately, STARS Air Ambulance was not available at the time.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the worker succumbed to his injuries. The incident left the community in shock and grief.
RCMP officers also responded to the scene, but their involvement was limited, as Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) took the lead in investigating the incident. OHS spokespersons expressed their condolences to Global News, stating, "it is always tragic when a worker dies on the job."
OHS later confirmed the worker had fallen from a height and they were actively investigating the incident. However, due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, no further details were disclosed.
The loss of this construction worker serves as a somber reminder of the risks that individuals in the construction industry face daily and underscores the importance of maintaining strict safety measures at construction sites, especially when working at heights, to prevent such tragedies.
