Province prepares for expanded psychological injury coverage to take effect in 2025

WCB of PEI launches Psychological Injuries Team

Starting January 1, 2025, the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) of Prince Edward Island is rolling out expanded coverage for psychological injuries, specifically those caused by work-related harassment. To prepare for this significant change, WCB has launched a dedicated Psychological Injuries Team and unveiled a suite of resources aimed at supporting workers, employers, and healthcare providers.

The new Psychological Injuries Team comprises five specialists: two Entitlement Officers, two Case Coordinators, and one Long-Term Benefits Administrator. Together, they are focused on streamlining claims processes and ensuring that affected workers receive timely and comprehensive support.

“Expanding psychological injury coverage to include harm caused by workplace harassment is a critical step in supporting Island workers,” says Allison Wyatt, WCB’s director of claims and compensation. “This change demonstrates our commitment to addressing the mental health needs of the workforce and providing holistic recovery options.”

Resources to Empower Recovery

To accompany the expanded coverage, WCB has introduced three user-friendly Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) publications to help workers and employers navigate the claims process and understand the scope of the new benefits. These include:

  • FAQ for Workers – Psychological injuries caused by work-related harassment
  • FAQ for Employers – Psychological injuries caused by work-related harassment
  • FAQ General Information – Psychological injuries caused by work-related harassment

These resources emphasize clarity and accessibility, aiming to reduce confusion and build confidence in the claims process.

More tools are in development, including a return-to-work toolkit and a guide to mental health support services. Both are designed to enhance recovery outcomes and facilitate seamless reintegration into the workplace for those impacted by psychological injuries.

Meeting the needs of PEI’s workforce

This initiative builds on WCB’s mission to create safer workplaces and provide effective recovery solutions for over 6,700 employers and 88,000 workers across Prince Edward Island. The agency’s comprehensive approach underscores the recognition that workplace injuries and illnesses extend beyond physical harm to include mental health challenges.

Employers and workers are encouraged to utilize the new resources to prepare for the policy shift and to foster workplace environments that prioritize safety and well-being.

As the countdown to 2025 continues, WCB’s expanded psychological injury coverage signals a progressive step toward more inclusive and supportive workplace practices across Prince Edward Island.
