Paul Belair takes over with aim of securing future of safety profession
Paul Belair has had a remarkable safety career, from inspecting nuclear reactors to exploring behind-the-scenes at the Royal Ontario Museum. Now, as the Chair of the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP), he's committed to enhancing the safety profession.
In a recent article, he says, "Our board is made up of innovative, strong professionals from all different industries and from across this country, and as a diverse group, we get a really holistic view of the issues we tackle."
Belair is passionate about elevating safety professionals to be decision-makers at the corporate table. BCRSP's vision extends beyond certification; it focuses on continuous professional development to enrich the safety profession. Belair emphasizes cooperation with other safety organizations to create safer workplaces collectively.
Title protection is a top priority for Belair and BCRSP. Public polls show strong support for setting minimum safety standards, and they are collaborating to advance title protection regulation. Belair believes this will strengthen the profession by introducing entry barriers.
BCRSP is also committed to adapting to changing practices. The New Canadian Registered Safety Technician Blueprint, effective in 2024, defines the competencies for entry-level safety technicians, promoting critical thinking and growth in the profession. Foresight discussions help anticipate trends and potential disruptions, ensuring BCRSP remains at the forefront of safety credentials.
Belair envisions a continuous pipeline of safety information, starting in high school and extending through post-secondary education. BCRSP's focus is on adding value to its certificants, upholding the highest standards, and advancing Canada's safety professionals. Belair concludes, "We work to the highest credentialing standards for Canada’s safety professionals, and as a board, we continue to advance and improve."
