Officers responded to a report of a gunshot inside an apartment building
Homicide detectives in Edmonton are investigating the death of a 20-year-old security guard who died while on duty at a central Edmonton apartment building early Friday morning, according to a report.
The incident occurred at the property located near 107 Avenue and 106 Street.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., Downtown Branch patrol officers also responded to a report of a gunshot inside the apartment building, according to the Edmonton Police Service.
Upon arrival, officers located the unresponsive security guard in a stairwell and immediately conducted first aid. EMS responded, treated and transported him to hospital where he was declared deceased.
Tammi Comeau, a resident of the building, said she was alerted to the situation by a neighbor shortly after hearing a loud noise.
"Another lady come out and basically said that she needed my help because the security guard was down on the floor. When I went out, he was down on the landing of the floor," Comeau told CTV News. She noted that the guard still had his phone in his hand and appeared to be in critical condition. "You could tell, I could tell, that he was probably not going to make it."
An autopsy is scheduled for today.
