But details not to be made public just yet
Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) has recently concluded its investigation into the cause, origin and circumstances of the 2022 explosion at Eastway Tank, Pump and Meter – but details around what happened won’t be released just yet.
The OFM did not specify when it finished investigating the incident.
OFM’s final Eastway report would not be shared publicly until "charges related to the event are no longer before the court,” it said on Friday, according to a CBC report.
"Laboratory testing and associated analyses" were still underway in early September, a spokesperson said via email at that time, according to the report.
"A collaborative decision was made, in consideration of the families affected by those who perished in this incident, to release all findings jointly after all charges and legal matters are settled," they said.
However, the police service already has access to the final report, according to CBC.
Earlier this year, Ontario’s Ministry of Labour laid three health and safety act charges against Eastway Tank, Pump & Meter and its owner for the incident that killed six people in 2022.
Six workers lost their lives in an explosion and fire on Jan. 13, 2022 at the Eastway workplace. It took firefighters more than four hours to bring the blaze under control, and it’s considered one of the worst workplace accidents in Ontario in the last 50 years.
The employer will face trial starting March 4.
However, it could be a long proceeding, as trial dates are scheduled into June, reported CBC.
Years before the explosion and fire at Eastway in 2022, one former employee had sued the company following a 2008 explosion.
In a 2010 civil case, former employee Sergey Yelgin claimed that Eastway had pressured him to return to work before he had the chance to recover from injuries sustained from a fuel tank blast, according to another CBC report.
