Worker was fatally injured while cutting down a tree

An Ontario employer is facing a five-figure fine following the death of a worker.
Constructor John Harris Concrete Ltd. has been fined $85,000 after pleading guilty in the Provincial Offences Court in Sarnia.
The incident occurred on Oct. 26, 2022, when one of the company’s five workers was clearing brush and felling trees around a drainage ditch.
The worker was fatally injured by a tree during the process, though the Ontario government did not specify how that happened.
A Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development investigation found that while the worker had been trained to operate a chainsaw safely, they were not trained on tree felling.
“John Harris Concrete Ltd. failed, as an employer, to provide training on how to safely fell trees to the worker, as required by section 25(2)(a) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act,” said the Ontario government.
