First Nation man dies, police officer injured following a reported assault

One police officer was injured after responding to a report of an assault on a First Nation in Saskatchewan.

On Sept. 8, at approximately 6:45 a.m., police received the report. The incident happened on Sunday on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.

As officers responded and approached a residence, a confrontation occurred with the adult male causing the officers to seek cover, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Ahtahkakoop detachment.

The adult male fled inside the residence, where two adults and two children were in.

During the police response, a firearm was discharged and the adult male sustained injuries as a result. Officers initiated life-saving efforts until EMS arrived at the scene.

The adult male, from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, was later pronounced deceased by EMS at the scene. His family has been notified.

Meanwhile, one officer is receiving medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries that occurred during the police response. No other officers reported physical injuries.

Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) will investigate the Saskatchewan RCMP's interaction with the deceased and the circumstances of his death.
