Employee was trying to retrieve a stuck suitcase when he fell
A devastating incident unfolded at Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) on Saturday, resulting in the death of a baggage worker.
Equans, an international technical services company, employed the worker, as revealed in a press release issued by Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) on Sunday.
The CEO of ADM, Philippe Rainville, is quoted in the statement, saying, "the entire YUL airport community is in mourning today, and we offer our sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues."
According to a CTV News report, a spokesperson from Quebec's workplace safety board, the CNESST, the worker was trying to get a suitcase out of a piece of equipment after it became stuck, potentially in a suitcase conveyor, when he tragically fell.
Two CNESST inspectors were promptly dispatched to the airport on Saturday. Their primary objective was to interview potential witnesses and gather information regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident, as explained by spokesperson Antoine Leclerc-Loiselle.
Determining the jurisdiction under which the airport falls is yet to be ascertained. In the event that it falls under federal jurisdiction, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada will lead the investigation instead of the CNESST.
ADM emphasized its collaboration with the authorities to ensure a smooth investigation process. Additionally, the company is providing support to the other employees affected by this heartbreaking incident.
"ADM has worked closely with the partners involved to coordinate the presence of assistance and support resources for the personnel who witnessed this accident. ADM would like to assure the YUL airport community of its full support following this tragic event,” reads the statement.
