Worker got injured while preparing scrap for the company's operations
Steel producer Algoma Steel has received two orders and one requirement from the Ontario government following an incident that led to a worker getting hurt last week.
The industrial accident happened on Aug. 27. A worker was critically injured while handling material, reported the Northern Ontario Business, citing the province's Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development of Ontario (MOL).
The employer notified MOL of the incident on that same day.
“One of our employees sustained an injury while preparing scrap for our operations and required medical attention," Algoma director of strategy, corporate affairs and sustainability Laura Devoni said, according to a CTV News report.
"We are supporting the individual and investigating the incident in accordance with our health and safety procedures."
Algoma Steel is “supporting the individual and investigating the incident in accordance with our health and safety procedures," said Devoni in the Northern Ontario Business report.
Algoma Steel has had a number of safety issues just this year.
In February, 12 workers were hurt with five being sent to hospital after a blast involving molten metal at the company’s workplace.
In May, another worker got hurt on the job at Algoma Steel when a fire broke out in a piece of equipment.
Also in May, the employer was charged with three violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) for the death of one of its workers.
