Winners receive up to 10K for demonstrating 'an unwavering commitment' to safety

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) has announced the winners of its 2024 Small Business Health and Safety Leadership Awards, recognizing three Ontario businesses for exemplary health and safety practices.
Gold: Invasive Phragmites Control Centre (Langton)
Following a heat-related incident involving an employee, this not-for-profit implemented a comprehensive heat stress prevention program. Measures include weather monitoring, cool water access, and routine safety meetings.
“We're very proud to receive this award,” said Executive Director Janice Gilbert. “It reinforces that what we’re doing to keep each other safe is working.”
Silver: Mary’s Muffins Canada Inc. (Oakville)
From day one, this bakery built a strong safety culture through clear policies, a detailed employee handbook, and regular team engagement.
“Health and safety has always been our #1 priority,” said founder Mary Legakis Engel. “I could not be more proud of our team.”
Bronze: The Conscious Builder (Carp/Ottawa)
Recognized for its multi-layered approach to site safety, including hazard-specific protocols, safety equipment support, and site management systems.
“This is not something I can take credit for,” said founder Casey Grey. “It’s something the team can be proud of.”
“These dedicated small business leaders have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fostering safe and healthy workplaces,” said Rod Cook, WSIB VP of Workplace Health and Safety Services. “Their innovative practices… set a standard of excellence for others to follow.”
Winners receive up to $10,000 to reinvest in safety.
