WSIB funds research to help injured workers recover and return to work

Researchers receive grants after submitting program proposals last year

WSIB funds research to help injured workers recover and return to work

It’s been recently announced that two researchers have received grants from Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) to conduct studies on how to improve return-to-work and recovery outcomes for injured and ill workers.

“Rehabilitation and reintegration into productive work are invaluable for helping injured or ill workers get back to a better quality of life,” said WSIB president and CEO Thomas Teahen. “This year’s grant recipients are to be congratulated for their innovative research projects, which hold great promise for finding new ways to do that.”

The recent recipients of the 2016 grants and the funding amounts for their two-year projects are Christopher McLeod, University of British Columbia, and Cameron Mustard, Institute for Work & Health.

McLeod will be receiving $344,928 for “improving approaches to early and sustainable return-to-work in the construction sector” and Mustard, will be receiving $248,670 for “strengthening disability management practices in the Ontario municipal sector.”

The studies are funded through the WSIB’s Grants Program, introduced in November 2015, to address current and emerging issues and strengthen Ontario’s workers’ compensation system.

Details about these projects are available on the WSIB website.

The WSIB is currently evaluating proposals submitted to the 2017 program and will announce the recipients later this year.
