Workplace Safety North names new chair of board of directors

Workplace Safety North (WSN) and Ontario Mine Rescue (OMR) have announced the appointment of Derek Budge as the new Chair of the Board of Directors.

Budge, a mining industry veteran with nearly 40 years of experience, takes on the role after serving as vice chair for two years under Lydia Renton.

“Being part of WSN is my way of giving back to the mining industry that shaped my career,” says Budge. “I’m excited to work alongside WSN President and CEO Mike Parent, Vice Chair Eric Haapamaki, and the entire board to advance the organization’s vision and mission.”

As chair, Budge will focus on implementing the updated WSN strategic plan. His goal is to ensure WSN remains a leader in promoting workplace safety across industries.

“WSN must stay flexible and ready to tackle new challenges,” says Budge. “Our vision is to make sure every worker comes home safe and healthy.”

Budge brings a wealth of expertise to his new role, having worked in both unionized and nonunionized environments and serving several industry boards. A Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) since 2005, his experience in mine rescue – both as a team member and as a management representative – underscores his dedication to the well-being of workers.

“My experience in mine rescue has given me a deep appreciation for the vital role that the WSN Ontario Mine Rescue program plays in the industry,” says Budge. “I’m committed to using my diverse leadership experiences to support the WSN mission and help shape its future.”

“My journey has given me a deep understanding of both the hands-on and management aspects of safety,” Budge says.
