Lafarge wins award for system that enhances driver safety during trailer hookups

Who won the Award of Excellence for Workplace Health and Safety?

Lafarge Canada Inc. has won the British Columbia government’s Award of Excellence for Workplace Health and Safety.

The provider of building solutions – including aggregates, cement, concrete and asphalt – was recognized for its introduction of an innovative Remote Transfer Switch System that enhances driver safety during trailer hookups.

This remote transfer switch system removes the need for drivers to stand between the trailer and truck, minimizing their exposure to high traffic areas and crush hazards. With a simple push of a button, drivers can activate the transfer reach wirelessly using a backup camera to align the hitch safely.

“This forward-thinking system allows drivers to connect transfer trailers to tandem trucks from within their cabs, reducing exposure to high-traffic areas and crush hazards,” said the B.C. government.

“By activating the system with a simple button push, drivers can wirelessly align the hitch using a backup camera, minimizing the need to exit the truck. This improvement not only shortens the time required for trailer connections but also significantly addresses common safety risks faced by drivers.”

Lafarge beat the other nominees, which include:

  • Emil Anderson Maintenance, which has developed the Plank Puller, a specialized safety tool designed to enhance the maintenance of wooden bridge decks. The device allows workers to safely and efficiently remove wooden planks from bridge surfaces, minimizing the risk of injury during the maintenance process.
  • Hall Constructors, which has developed a Competency-Based Training Program designed to address skill gaps within the road-building and civil construction industries. This safety training initiative focuses on equipping workers with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their jobs safely and effectively.
  • Terus Construction, a Division of Colas Western Canada Inc., has launched Project Lifeline, an innovative safety initiative that leverages the features of the Apple Watch to enhance worker safety. This program includes noise monitoring capabilities and "working alone" alerts, ensuring that employees are constantly connected and protected while on the job.
  • The Universal Group is at the forefront of safety innovation with their development of a customized Salus tool designed for Part 18 compliance and the integration of a truck-mounted Automated Flagger Assistance Device (AFAD). This innovative tool aligns with the requirements set forth in the MOTI Traffic Management Manual and is set for deployment in 2025.
