The Work Safe Alberta awards honoured two organizations and one individual this year for leadership and innovation in the field of occupational health and safety.
Raytheon Canada’s services and support division took home the Health and Safety Leader Award (Large Business) for its demonstrated occupational health and safety leadership in its longstanding voluntary joint health and safety committee and in its prioritization of leadership participation in OHS activities, said the provincial government's OHS Council, the administrative body that selects the winners. Raytheon has implemented numerous leading indicators and uses these to identify opportunities for continuous improvements in its OHS program.
Earthmaster Environmental Strategies was the winner of the Health and Safety Leader Award (Small Business). Its occupational health and safety leadership is exemplified in its establishment of a voluntary joint health and safety committee, and its commitment to incentivizing both safety performance and participation, said the OHS Council. Earthmaster emphasizes safety stand-downs during peak work periods, and monitors field-level hazard assessment and control data in real time, to ensure quality.
Glyn Jones, partner at EHS Partnerships, won the Individual Achievement Award. His achievements include his involvement in the development and stewardship of several OHS certificate and diploma programs at universities across Canada, and his long time involvement with multiple professional associations, including the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering. Jones impacted Alberta’s OHS community by sharing his knowledge with many varied audiences, through mentoring, coaching, speaking engagements and as the training and development columnist for Canadian Occupational Safety.
The award winners have shown an exemplary commitment to improving workplace health and safety at their workplaces and across Alberta, said the OHS Council. The award recipients were honoured at a luncheon and presentation in Edmonton on May 12.
