New Brunswick university opens application for online associate program in OHS
“We are so pleased to now have this credential available for OHS practitioners across Canada and around the world.”

The University of Fredericton (UFred) in N.B. is introducing its online Associate Degree in Occupational Health and Safety (AOHS) program, the first associate-level program offered at a Canadian university.

“When we applied for an Associate Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, it was because we knew that there was a significant need for more degree-level OHS education,” said Dr. Sheri McKillop, vice president of academics at UFred. “We are so pleased to now have this credential available for OHS practitioners across Canada and around the world.”

The university is now accepting applications for the first cohort of students who will take on the program. Interested parties can apply here.

Approved for accreditation by the Province of New Brunswick in August, it will expose students to multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in topics such as management systems, risk assessment, industrial hygiene, environmental factors and more. More details about the program is available here.

“The AOHS degree program was designed specifically for online learning, meaning that the technology, academic content, and student supports within the courses all cater specifically to student success in an online environment,” said Trevor Pothier, vice president of advancement at UFred. “Our online programs provide working professionals with an edge - they are so much more than simply watching an instructor on video or reading a textbook while watching a PowerPoint.”

Classes are set to start in November.

Students can complete the program between two and three and a half years, depending on whether they opt to take one or two courses at a time.

Existing students taking the UFred Certificate in Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental Systems (COHSES) or alumni who have graduated from the COHSES program can apply for transfer credits for the courses previously completed.

Students who have graduated from a one-year OHS program at community colleges may also be eligible for transfer credits. This reduces the total number of courses students have to take in some instances by half, according to UFred.
