American Society of Safety Professionals announces other elected leaders
The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) has announced its new leaders from the 2023 Society elections and James Thornton will serve as ASSP president for 2023-24.
“Our Society’s strength is rooted in our dedicated volunteers and their desire to take on key leadership positions,” says current ASSP president Christine Sullivan, whose term ends June 30. “Engaged safety professionals have always defined ASSP, keeping it vibrant and advancing worker safety and health everywhere.”
Thornton is the president of consulting firm Alpha Industries LLC. He previously directed safety and health for 40 years at Huntington Ingalls Industries, America’s larges military shipbuilder. Thornton holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering and a master’s degree in industrial hygiene.
In addition to Thornton’s election, Pam Walaski was named president-elect, meaning she will take on the role of president in July 2024. Linda Tapp was elected to the role of senior vice president. Thomas Kramer will become vice president of finance. And Stephanie Johnson will become director-at-large.
All terms begin July 1. Each is a one-year term, except for the three-year terms of the vice president of finance and directors-at-large. The annual succession of leaders from senior vice president to president-elect, and from president-elect to president, is automatic.
Expect to have a chance to meet all ASSP leaders at the Safety 23 Conference + Expo in San Antonio, Texas during the first week of June.
