Canadian managers may be held more accountable for the job satisfaction and commitment of their employees than American managers, according to research from Right Management. Right Management is the talent and career management expert within Manpower, the global leader in employment services.
The firm analyzed online responses from more than 450 senior human resources professionals in both countries and found a gap between U.S. and Canadian managers:
Does your organization hold leaders accountable for engagement?
“It would seem that Canadian leaders are held to a higher standard of accountability when it comes to engaging employees in the workplace,” says Right Management vice president and national practice leader, Dr. Henryk Krajewski. “As few as 18 per cent of U.S. organizations hold managers accountable compared with 28 per cent of those in Canada.”
“Many organizations do not have formal programs to identify and promote leaders that can foster strong engagement among staff.” says Krajewski. “Yet we know from current research that inspirational leadership plays a key role in creating meaning for employees, and leads directly to organization performance. In any case, if organizations do not hold leaders accountable for building motivation and commitment, then employees will cease to identify with their work and organization, and will ultimately become disengaged and/or underperform.”
At a time when new challenges are confronting leaders at a quickening pace no organization can afford to overlook leader development, Krajewski noted. “Bottom-line results depend on bringing leaders to the top of their potential. These are the key players who can directly impact the engagement and productivity of a workforce, as well as morale and retention rates… all leading to overall better business performance.”
