The Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) is now accepting applications for the Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) certification program.

“Certification is at the core of what the BCRSP stands for,” said BCRSP chair Kevin Dawson. “Through our participation in the development of the INSHPO Capability Framework, we recognize there are many areas of practice, therefore it makes sense to develop certification schemes to match them.”

To be eligible for the CRST designation, applicants must possess a minimum of one year’s experience in occupational health and safety, and have successfully completed a one-year OHS certificate program from a recognized educational institution, or possess a two-year non-OHS diploma from a recognized educational institution or is qualified to journeyperson status in a trade.

"A CRST supports a safe working environment by maintaining OHS administrative processes, conducting training and using a range of state-of-the-art tools, processes and common practice solutions to OHS risks," BCRSP said. "They oversee and drive monitoring and compliance in relation to technical and behavioral risk controls."

More than 600 safety practitioners have expressed interest in the CRST certification since the announcement about the certification in 2017, BCRSP said.

The first CRST examination is scheduled for March of 2019.
