The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has appointed Rob Morgan as its new chief executive officer (CEO), effective Feb. 18, 2025.
Morgan – a professional engineer with nearly 40 years of experience in the oil and gas sector – will lead the AER at a time when regulatory oversight, environmental protection, and workplace safety remain key industry priorities.
AER Board Chair Duncan Au said Morgan’s extensive background in both operations and leadership makes him well-suited for the role.
“With decades of industry experience as a petroleum engineer and corporate executive, Rob comes to the AER with a strong perspective on the current issues facing both the oil and gas industry and the regulator,” Au stated.
Morgan’s career began as a field production engineer with Murphy Oil, and he has since held senior leadership positions overseeing field operations, engineering, and environmental protection. Most recently, as President and CEO of Strathcona Resources Ltd., he led the company’s expansion into one of Canada’s largest oil producers, managing a workforce of 1,000 employees.
“I am grateful to the Board and CEO Search Committee for this opportunity,” said Morgan. “I’m steadfast in my belief that a modern, efficient, and effective regulator can provide the necessary safeguards for the environment while ensuring industry can deliver on the safe and innovative development of Alberta’s resources.”
Morgan’s appointment comes as the province seeks to balance economic growth with regulatory effectiveness.
“Through the Premier of Alberta, the provincial government has articulated its aspirational goal to support Canada’s economic development by increasing oil and gas production and accessing new export markets. The AER is a key element of this process.”
