Government agencies investigating incident
The New Brunswick coroner’s office and WorkSafeNB are investigating the death of a 60-year-old man at the American Iron and Metal recycling plant.
The worker – identified as Darrell Richards – died on Friday. The Saint John Police Force responded to the incident at 145 Gateway Dr. around 1:30 p.m. AT on Thursday, and Richards was transported to the hospital for treatment. The worker, however, later died.
"Typically, investigations can take several months to complete. As this is an active investigation, we cannot provide any further details at this time," said Laragh Dooley, a spokesperson for WorkSafeNB, in a statement.
The Saint John Police major crime unit is assisting in the investigation.
Previously, one bank employee in Toronto was stabbed multiple times during an attempted bank robbery. Also, a building site floor in New Brunswick collapsed on Tuesday in Moncton, N.B., leaving several workers injured.
Meanwhile, a 38-year-old construction worker died after getting struck by a cement truck while on the job in Ontario.
Recently, a five-member jury at a coroner's inquest in New Brunswick determined that all higher-risk workplaces should require safety supervisors dedicated to on-site safety compliance. And it said it would be up to WorksafeNB to identify which workplaces would qualify. The inquest looked into the Jan. 30, 2017 death of construction worker Steven Lutes, who died six days before his 42nd birthday. Lutes died from injuries he sustained after a fall from the fourth storey of the then-unfinished Hilton Garden Inn on Queen Street.
