Victim now out of the hospital, suspect was shot and killed
A Saskatchewan RCMP was shot in the head in the course of searching a property over the weekend, according to reports.
The shooting happened around 11:45 p.m. Saturday at a commercial property in Waseca, while officers were executing a search warrant.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services along with other members of the Critical Incident Response Team assisting with the operation. The operation followed a months-long investigation into drug and weapons trafficking in west-central Saskatchewan, according to an RCMP media release issued Wednesday.
They arrived at the scene and found four people inside. Two men and one woman exited the building and were safely taken into custody.
However, the fourth person, a 33-year-old Lloydminster area man, remained in the building and refused to comply with police officers’ commands, according to the police. When the man did exit the building, he continued to disobey the officers.
Officers used “non-lethal methods” to get the man to comply. However, the man then displayed a firearm, and there was an exchange of fire, according to the police. The suspect was shot and killed, and one member of the Police Dog Services was shot in the head.
The officer has been treated and released from hospital for what were considered non-life-threatening injuries, according to RCMP. The Saskatoon Police Service has been asked to handle the investigation.
In November 2021, a peace officer was shot and injured while at work in New Brunswick.
Of the three people taken into custody in Waseca, one was arrested on outstanding warrants. Police did not provide any information about the remaining two suspects, saying only that an investigation by the Battlefords RCMP gang task force remains open.
In October 2021, a 73-year-old male taxi cab driver died following a shooting in Scarborough, Ont.
A month later, another lawsuit was filed pertaining to the “Rust” tragedy that happened last month. Script supervisor Mamie Mitchell – who called police after the shooting on the New Mexico film set – filed the suit which claims that the film script did not require actor Alec Baldwin to fire a gun when he fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
