Worker was an employee of Nova Fish Farms, subsidiary of Ocean Trout Canada
On Wednesday afternoon, authorities confirmed that a man died in the water at a fish farming operation near St. Alban's on Newfoundland's south coast.
The RCMP's Bay d'Espoir detachment received a report of a sudden death shortly before 2 p.m. on Wednesday, prompting the investigation.
According to a CBC News report, the man was an employee of Nova Fish Farms, a subsidiary of Ocean Trout Canada based in Nova Scotia.
He was found unresponsive in the water. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, according to the RCMP. The incident occurred on a barge where the employee was working.
Ocean Trout Canada, known for having the largest portfolio of steelhead trout licenses in North America, expanded its farming operations to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2021. The company, which also operates in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, provided this information on its website.
Authorities are working in conjunction with the office of the chief medical examiner and Service N.L.'s occupational health and safety division to determine the circumstances surrounding the employee's death.
The commercial fishing industry is one of the most dangerous in Canada but has slowly been making improvements over the years to improve safety.
