Crown corporation shares some of the findings during the initial investigation
WorkSafeNB has launched an investigation into a fatal accident that occurred at a construction site for the Neweg Energy Project, located 29 kilometers east of Sussex. According to a report from the Telegraph-Journal, the incident took place on July 18, 2024, involving a subcontractor working on the turbine project.
Amy Pellerin, director of Canadian developments of Natural Forces, the Halifax-based company overseeing the project, confirmed the death. “Neweg Energy Limited Partnership was made aware of the terrible incident after the emergency services were contacted, and we offer our most sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the individual who has passed,” Pellerin stated.
Construction on the six-turbine project was immediately halted following the incident and resumed on Monday after receiving clearance from WorkSafeNB. The details surrounding the accident remain under investigation. WorkSafeNB communications manager Lynn Meahan-Carson shared that the worker was fatally injured while working around heavy equipment but declined to provide further specifics, including the individual’s age or residency, due to the ongoing investigation.
Sussex RCMP Sgt. Kevin Glode confirmed that local emergency services, including Ambulance New Brunswick and the Penobsquis Fire Department, responded to the scene. He noted that there was no indication of criminal activity, and the investigation has been handed over to WorkSafeNB. Glode also refrained from disclosing personal details about the deceased worker.
Transport Canada is also investigating the site, focusing on potential vehicular involvement. However, Transport Canada spokesperson Hicham Ayoun indicated that their team had not been contacted by either the RCMP or WorkSafeNB and emphasized that Transport Canada’s jurisdiction does not extend to road vehicle incidents unless specifically requested for assistance.
The Neweg Energy Project, which began construction in April 2024, is owned by Natural Forces and the Mi’gmaq United Investment Network. It represents the second phase of the Wocawson Energy Project, following a five-turbine project completed in 2020. The development is located east of Springdale and south of Portage Vale.
