Authorities allege inadequate safety measures contributed to fatal accident

WorkSafeNB charges tire company after employee fatality

A Moncton tire company faces a workplace safety charge after an employee was fatally injured by a 454-kilogram tire last fall.

Coast Tire & Auto Service Ltd. has been charged under New Brunswick’s Occupational Health and Safety Act for allegedly failing to provide appropriate equipment to move oversized tires at its Baig Boulevard location. The charge was laid Monday in Moncton Provincial Court.

According to WorkSafeNB, the charge stems from an incident on October 18, 2024, when a tire fell on an employee being unloaded from a truck.

Lynn Meahan-Carson, WorkSafeNB’s manager of communications, stated that the company did not adequately address the associated hazards. “Our investigation revealed that while Coast Tire & Auto Service Ltd. had a written procedure for handling or transporting large heavy tires from the trailer to the warehouse, the procedure did not address the associated hazards,” Meahan-Carson said.

On October 18, 2024, the tragic accident occurred at Coast Tire & Auto Service Ltd. on Baig Boulevard in Moncton, New Brunswick. Timothy “Tim” David Steeves, a 41-year-old employee with 17 years of service, was fatally injured when a 454-kilogram tire fell on him during unloading operations.

Emergency responders, including the Moncton Fire Department and Ambulance New Brunswick, arrived promptly at approximately 10:30 am. Deputy fire chief Keith Guptill reported that paramedics were performing CPR upon their arrival. Despite their efforts, Steeves succumbed to his injuries.

CBC News reported that Coast Tire is scheduled to return to court on March 24.
