Workplace fatality in Sask. results in $560,000 fine for Manitoba company

A workplace fatality has resulted in $560,000 in fines for the Winnipeg company Langenburg Redi-Mix. The fine was imposed by the Government of Saskatchewan’s Labour Relations and Workplace Safety division as the incident occurred at a work site near Eyebrow, Sask.

On Feb. 13, 2017, a worker was fatally injured when a wheel loader rolled backwards, pinning the worker between the loader and another vehicle.

Langenburg Redi-Mix was found guilty of two violations of occupational health and safety legislation:

•clause 3-8(a) of the Saskatchewan Employment Act (being an employer, fail to ensure, insofar as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all of the employer’s workers, resulting in the death of a worker)

•clause 17(1)(a) of the regulations (being an employer, fail to ensure that all work at a place of employment is sufficiently and competently supervised, resulting in the death of a worker).

The company was fined $200,000 on each count plus a surcharge of $160,000.
