Rotating saw blade cuts worker, company fined $25,000

Power and Mine Supply Company, based in Winnipeg, has been fined $20,000 plus an additional $5,000 payable to Manitoba’s Workplace Safety and Health for the purpose of educating the public on matters relating to workplace safety and health.      

On Feb. 9, 2017, a worker from Power & Mine Supply Company was manufacturing a wooden crate and was using a mitre saw. The guard was not installed and the worker’s hand came into contact with the rotating blade resulting in serious injuries.

Dec. 20, 2019, Power and Mine Supply Company, Limited pleaded guilty to section 16.5(1)(a) of Manitoba’s Workplace Safety and Health Regulations, M.R. 217/2006 to the charge of failing to ensure that a machine had safeguards sufficient to prevent a worker from coming into contact with points on the machine at which material is cut.
