The government of Newfoundland and Labrador has released the review into the workplace health, safety and compensation system, Working Together – Safe, Accountable, Sustainable.
The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Statutory Review Committee provided the report to the Dan Crummell, the minister of Service NL and the minister responsible for the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (WHSCC), in January following last year’s extensive public consultation process. Consultations were held in 13 communities across the province from February to April 2013.
“The statutory review is an important component of the workplace health, safety and compensation system as it brings together the views of the province's workers, employers and other interested parties to identify potential improvements to the system,” said Crummell.
“These recommendations affect workers and employers so it is important that we provide members of the public with an opportunity to respond to these recommendations.”?
There are in total 42 policy recommendations from the review committee and an additional 90 recommendations related to the comprehensive review of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act.
“Today, the workers’ compensation system in this province is fundamentally stronger than at any point in the last decade with general satisfaction with the system steadily increasing,” said Crummell. “We want the system to continue in this direction and we believe that working together with our stakeholders and the public we can continue to develop a system that is safe, accountable and sustainable.”
