A coroner’s inquest has been scheduled into the death of a Troy Bourque who was killed at a sawmill in Fredericton, New Brunswick more than three years ago.

On October 10, 2019, Bourque was working for Devon Lumber when he was hurt and killed.  According to local news reports, Fredericton police responded to the call, but the investigation was turned over to WorkSafeNB.

A news release from the province announced the inquest has been scheduled to begin January 16th and is expected to last three days.

“The presiding coroner and a jury will publicly hear evidence from witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.”

An inquest is a formal court proceeding in which evidence relating to the death is presented, but the New Brunswick Coroner Service is an independent fact-finding agency and does not assign legal responsibility.

Devon Lumber produces softwood and cedar lumber products. It has been in operation for more than 70 years and is one of the oldest family-run sawmills in New Brunswick.
