A worryingly silent crisis, male mental health has been thankfully gaining more traction in Canada and around the world as we grapple with the realities of conditions such as anxiety and depression. Nevertheless, there remains a stigma and too often men do not feel comfortable asking for help.

This is dangerous, because a lack of openness and support can lead to catastrophic events. For example, in the U.S. the construction sector has a suicide rate of 53 per 100,000, which is four times higher than the general population (according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
Similar statistics can be found in Europe, Australia and the rest of the world. “This issue isn’t isolated to a specific region, with almost two-thirds of worldwide suicides completed by men,” says Avetta.
Stressors can exist in any workplace, and a number of studies have shown that it is undeniable that workers in industrial environments can be just as prone to mental health issues as any other occupation.
