The government of Alberta is congratulating the first 10 occupational health and safety officers who recently completed newly designed peace officer training.
The new designation gives officers the ability to write tickets to employers and workers who cut corners and put people at risk.
“When you see them on your job site, know they are looking out for your well-being. If you’re taking risks on the job, you can now expect to be ticketed for it,” said Thomas Lukaszuk, minister of jobs, skills, training and labour.
There are 67 ticketable provisions that will hold workers and employers accountable for specific violations of the OHS legislation. Tickets range from $100 to $500 and can be issued on the spot.
The next set of graduating officers is set to complete training in June 2014. Classes of officers will continue training until all 143 OHS officers are certified to write tickets.
