Halifax Regional Police are investigating the sudden death of a 19-year-old female employee at a Walmart store in Halifax. The incident occurred over the weekend, prompting an active investigation by local authorities.
CTV News noted police were dispatched to the Walmart located at 6990 Mumford Road around 9:30 pm on Saturday, where they found the young woman deceased inside the store. Police confirmed the young woman's body was discovered inside a large baking oven that was on at the time.
In a statement, Walmart spokesperson Amanda Moss confirmed the tragic event, expressing the company’s condolences. “We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family. We extend our sincerest condolences to those who were closest to them,” the statement read. Moss also noted that Walmart is providing support to its employees during this challenging time, including access to 24/7 virtual care and on-site grief counseling.
The Mumford Road location will remain closed until further notice as authorities continue their investigation. The Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration has acknowledged awareness of the situation, stating, “The Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration is aware of the situation and continues to engage with our partners the Halifax Regional Police, who have control of the scene. We are unable to share further information at this time.”
Investigators are collaborating with Occupational Health and Safety and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service to determine how this tragedy unfolded.
