Ontario Ministry of Labour says ‘worker was struck by a piece of equipment’
The Ontario Ministry of Labour is investigating the circumstances that led to the death of one worker earlier this week.
The incident happened in Whitby on Tuesday. Durham police officers were called to assist an ambulance in the area of Hopkins Street and Consumers Drive around 11:30 a.m.
There, they found a man who was trapped under a steamroller and was unconscious.
Emergency crews removed the steamroller and performed “life-saving measures” on the worker, according to a report from the Toronto Star.
The labour ministry later confirmed to The Star that they began an investigation after “a worker suffered fatal injuries when they were struck by a piece of machinery.”
The worker works for Central Park Paving, a driveway repair company, the ministry said, according to a report from Durham Radio News.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with the worker’s family, friends, and loved ones,” said the ministry.
The ministry has assigned an inspector to look into the incident, and it will not provide further details as the investigation is ongoing, according to the report.
