Worker in critical but stable condition after incident at metals recycling facility

One worker was hospitalized and in critical condition following a “work-related” incident at a metals recycling plant in Saskatchewan, according to reports.

The incident happened on Tuesday, though what exactly happened has not been publicized as of writing of this article.

Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) air ambulance confirmed that STAR-9 was dispatched to a scene call emergency just after 11 a.m. that day, and one patient was transported to the Regina General Hospital, according to a CTV News report.

“After receiving emergency care on-site, the employee is in critical but stable condition at a nearby medical facility,” a spokesperson with Evraz North America said, according to a Global News report.

STARS noted that while it is not common for its air ambulances to respond to calls within city limits, the service “works closely with local first responders and can attend such calls if required,” according to the CTV News report.

Evraz has halted operations at the facility following the incident.

“Our prayers are with our teammate and his family," a spokesperson for Evraz wrote, according to CBC. "We would like to thank the members of Regina's emergency services for their prompt response and action."

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Saskatchewan received a report of an injury at a business on Armour Road at around 8:20 Tuesday morning, and it – along with emergency medical services (EMS) – sent respondents to the scene.

“To be mindful of the privacy of those involved, we are unable to provide any further details,” the police said, according to CTV News.

The employer said it will “fully cooperate” in the investigation of the incident.

“Preventing occupational injuries of any kind is a top priority of the Evraz OHS management system,” the company said on its website.
