WCB expands safety training for PEI workers and employers

The Workers Compensation Board (WCB) of Prince Edward Island is expanding its suite of free online safety courses, adding three new certificate programs to support workers and employers.

The newly available courses—Ergonomics, Developing a Respiratory Protection Program, and Hearing Conservation Programs—build on the success of the first five courses launched in May 2024. These self-paced courses, accessible through the WCB website, aim to enhance occupational health and safety knowledge across various industries.

“The goal of the courses is to provide practical knowledge and insights into occupational health and safety and compensation topics that support both workers and employers,” says Danny Miller, the WCB’s Director of Occupational Health and Safety.

Since the initial launch, over 400 individuals have registered for the courses, and 516 completion certificates have been issued. Each course aligns with PEI workplace legislation, ensuring relevant and applicable training for participants. Workers can take the courses independently or as part of a workplace safety orientation or training program.

Beyond online learning, the WCB continues to offer free in-person and live virtual training sessions from September to June, as well as pre-recorded webinars on various workplace safety topics. Employers can also schedule customized workplace workshops at no cost. Additionally, the annual Workplace Health and Safety Conference provides an opportunity for deeper engagement through specialized workshops.

The WCB serves close to 6,800 employers and over 89,000 workers across PEI, working to foster safe and healthy workplaces while supporting injury recovery.
