2023 accident involving a semi and a bus killed 17 people
Manitoba will be launching public consultations as it looks to redesign the intersection where 17 people died in a single crash back in 2023.
The consultations for the intersection of Highway 5 and the Trans-Canada Highway will likely start before July 1, CTV News reported, citing a spokesperson for the Manitoba government.
The incident happened on June 15, 2023, when a semi and a bus carrying seniors to a Carberry casino collided at the intersection.
The incident left 17 people dead.
Following the incident, rumble strips were installed at the intersection. There were also plans to improve signage leading up the intersection.
The consultations are expected to be finished in the fall, the spokesperson said, according to CTV News. The consultations will include local residents, municipal government and trucking companies.
Options being considered include creating a roundabout, widening the median to provide a safe space for vehicles to stop while crossing the highway, or a restricted crossing U-turn or RCUT, according to the report.
With the RCUT, vehicles would not be able to cross the highway directly. They would have to turn onto the highway and then use a U-turn lane.
A fourth option could potentially come out of discussions, the spokesperson said.
The government is expected to come up with the decision on the final design option and layout in early 2025. Construction is expected to be finished in 2026, according to the report.
