Construction worker dies at worksite in Montreal

One man has died in a workplace accident in downtown Montreal on Wednesday, according to a report.

The incident happened on a building under construction at the corner of Cathcart and Square-Phillips streets in the city’s commercial district, reported CBC.

"A tragic accident occurred today, resulting in the death of a subcontractor employee working with our company," construction firm Magil Construction, the employer, said in a press release, according to the report.

"The site has been evacuated, and we remind all our workers that psychological support is available to them. Most importantly, we wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased employee."

The worker was in his mid-20s, said Quebec Labour Minister Jean Boulet, who happened to be at a meeting with the board of directors of the Commission des normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) nearby when the incident occurred.

"I want to offer my condolences to his colleagues, his loved ones and his family," Boulet said, according to CBC.

CNESST will be investigating the circumstances around the worker’s death.

Boulet was meeting with the CNESST about the prevention of workplace accidents, according to CBC.

The report did not explain what exactly happened. Nor did it share the identity of the worker.
