Walmart Halifax reopens 3 months after worker's death

The Walmart store in Nova Scotia where a worker was found dead three months ago has reopened, according to a report.

The Mumford Road store in Halifax opened its doors to customers again at 7 a.m. Monday, reported CBC.

"It's great to have our customers and our associates back in the store," said Nick Ritcey with Walmart Canada's corporate affairs in the report.

However, the company said it has not forgotten what happened to their worker.

The body of Gursimran Kaur, a 19-year-old worker who moved from India, was located in a large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s bakery department late in October 2024. The store closed right after the incident.

"Obviously the tragedy is still top of mind and it's something that will be sad forever," said Ritcey in the CBC report.

Walmart later said the oven was removed and would no longer be used, according to the report.

With the reopening, Walmart welcomed approximately 325 staff, said Ritcey in the report. These workers were paid throughout the renovation and also had opportunities to work at other Walmart stores, he said. And supports continue to be available to them.

Walmart is also still in contact with Kaur's family and will consider ways to honour the young woman, noted CTV News.

"Three months is still very recent for that magnitude of a tragedy," Ritcey said in the report. "We'll continue to be in contact and make sure that we work out the best situation possible with them."
