On this International Women’s Day, the Top Women in Safety for 2024 are defying traditional gender roles within the safety industry. The release of the special report highlights their significant contributions and achievements, shedding light on the evolving landscape of safety leadership.
Natalie Carscadden, a governor at the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, says the dynamics within industries typically dominated by men, are shifting. “You now see women excelling in industries such as mining, forestry, oil and gas, and other industrialized sectors.”
Amandeep Beesla, an HSE consultant and award recipient, stresses the importance of education and mentorship in overcoming gender biases. Beesla asserts, “to encourage people to join the field, there needs to be a welcoming community and work atmosphere.”
This year’s Top Women in Safety have demonstrated a dedication to continuous learning, creating a culture of caring, and employing data-driven decision-making strategies.
Janet Holt, director of health and safety field support at Hydro One, shares insights into fostering a culture of continuous learning within the organization. “It’s about determining what incidents can potentially cause harm and classifying them so that we can learn and put proactive measures in place,” says Holt.
