Newfoundland and Labrador MP to stay until next federal election

Labour Minister O'Reagan stepping down from cabinet

Federal Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan is stepping down from his cabinet post.

The long-time politician and former journalist made the announcement in a statement issued on Thursday. He also said he will not seek re-election in the next federal election, saying he is stepping away from politics for family reasons.

The 53-year-old MP from Newfoundland and Labrador’s St. John’s has served as the labour minister since 2021.

O'Regan was elected to Parliament in 2015 as the MP for St. John's South-Mount Pearl. He has been in cabinet since 2017.

He has also held the natural resources, Indigenous services and veterans affairs portfolios.

Before entering politics, O'Regan was a host of the CTV morning show Canada AM and a national correspondent for the network.

Trudeau and his cabinet are scheduled to meet on Friday, with a focus on clearing up unfilled appointments.
