Campaign aims to end harassment in the workplace
The International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 190 (also known as C190) was adopted in June 2019 and came into effect this year on June 25, 2021.
C190 is an international treaty – the first of its kind – which aims to address violence and harassment in the workplace. The governments that ratify the treaty will be required to adopt laws and policies targeted violence and harassment at work.
To drum up support for C190, the ILO is launching a global campaign to encourage national governments to ratify and implement the treaty.
“A better future of work is free of violence and harassment. I urge all countries to #RatifyC190,” said Guy Ryder, Director-General, ILO.
As part of its efforts, the ILO has released a Campaign Toolkit with materials such as posters, banners and a PowerPoint presentation – campaigners are encouraged to share and amplify the message online by sharing through the #RatifyC190 hashtag (also in French: #RatifiezC190 and in Spanish: #RatificarC190).
Materials are available in English, Spanish and French.
“Eliminating violence and harassment at work should unite all of us, governments, employers and workers. Together, we can ensure that workplaces are safe, respectful and inclusive,” said Robert Suárez Santos, Secretary-General, International Organization of Employers (IOE).
Added Sharan Burrow, General Secretary, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC):
“The ratification of C190, and its effective implementation along with R206, will provide every worker the right to a world of work free from violence and harassment. Whatever the form of their contractual relationship, whether they work in the formal or informal economy, or in a rural or urban setting.”
