Workplace safety investigation launched after fatal incident at P.E.I. monastery

Prince Edward Island’s Workers Compensation Board (WCB) has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of a Buddhist monk, which occurred after a falling tree struck him at the Great Enlightenment Buddhist Institute Society (GEBIS) property in Heatherdale. The incident, which also resulted in injuries to another monk, is being treated as a work-related accident.

The unfortunate event took place on August 22, 2024, while the two monks were working in a wooded area on the monastery’s property. According to a statement from the GEBIS executive secretary, Geoffrey Yang, the monks were aged 46 and 58.

Emergency services were immediately summoned to the scene, and first responders arrived promptly. Despite their swift response, one monk succumbed to his injuries the following day, while the other sustained fractures.

In a heartfelt message to the community, Yang expressed sorrow over the loss. “We have lost a beloved brother. Though we are deeply grieving, we are grateful for the support from the emergency first responders and the staff at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. At this time, we ask the community to join us in prayer for our brother and their families,” he said. GEBIS is currently collaborating with the family of the deceased monk to arrange his funeral.

Taking action after accident

The WCB’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Division learned of the incident from a third party, rather than being notified directly. This delay has raised concerns about the reporting procedures for serious work-related injuries.

In an email to CBC News, WCB spokesperson Dominique Chouinard emphasised the sensitivity of investigating workplace fatalities and extended the board’s condolences to the monk’s family and the entire GEBIS community.

“It goes without saying that we extend our sincere condolences to the deceased’s family and the entire GEBIS community on the loss of their family and community member,” Chouinard stated. She also reminded employers and workers of the critical importance of reporting serious work-related injuries immediately to the WCB’s OHS Division through their 24/7 emergency line.

The WCB’s investigation will focus on determining the circumstances leading to the accident and ensuring that proper safety protocols were followed.
