Oil producer Syncrude is investigating the death of a contract worker at its Aurora site located north of Fort McMurray, Alta., the company said in a press release.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene at around 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 19 to attend to an incident, but the worker died from injuries. No other workers were injured in this incident.

“This is devastating news for all of us at Syncrude. The safety and well-being of our employees and contractors is always our top concern,” said Steve Yatauro, senior vice president of production. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this difficult time.”

Syncrude is now working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.

“We have also commenced our own investigation to find out what happened,” adds Yatauro.

Company spokesperson Will Gibson said the identity of the worker and other details of the incident will not be released for privacy reasons, according to media reports.
