Worker suffered an electric shock after maintenance work on a portable electric heater
An oil and gas employer is investigating an incident that caused an injury to a crew member, according to a report.
The incident happened last month, on ExxonMobil Canada Properties’ Hebron platform offshore Newfoundland.
The worker had just completed maintenance on a portable electric heater, reported Offshore.
While reconnecting the heater through a temporary power cord to a 600-V, 4-A electric power source, the worker suffered an electric shock to the left hand, according to the report.
The staff member received treatment from the onboard platform nurse.
The worker was wearing protective equipment at the time of the incident.
The Canada-Newfoundland Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) is monitoring ExxonMobil’s investigation into the incident that could have resulted in a fatality, according to the report.
Newfoundland and Labrador employer Hibernia Management and Development Co. is also investigating an accident on its Hibernia platform that occurred in late May, reported Offshore.
During an operation to retrieve completion tubing from the wellbore, a section of the tubing separated and fell about 5 m to the drill floor. The tubing weighed about 272 kg.
It dropped from the pick-up/laydown system while the pipe was being shifted from a vertical to a horizontal position.
No one was injured in the incident.
