WSIB opens submission process for safety leadership awards

Ontario's independently-owned small businesses have an opportunity to be recognized and rewarded for their commitment to workplace health and safety. The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is calling on companies with fewer than 50 employees to enter the 2024 Small Business Health and Safety Leadership Awards. Entrants have the chance to win up to $10,000 by demonstrating how they have enhanced safety in their workplaces over the past year.

The top three businesses will be awarded significant cash prizes to commend their efforts in improving safety standards. The awards are structured as follows:

  • First place receives $10,000
  • Second place gets $6,000
  • Third place is awarded $4,000

Applications are straightforward: businesses need to fill out a submission form and return it via email by June 30, 2024. Further details and assistance are available on the WSIB website.

While the monetary rewards are undoubtedly attractive, past winners emphasize the prestige and recognition that come with being acknowledged as leaders in health and safety within Ontario. Last year's top award went to Sign FX, a company praised for its exemplary safety initiatives.

Rod Cook, Vice President of Workplace Health and Safety Services at the WSIB, encourages businesses to share their success stories. "We know there are many great success stories out there about small businesses that have raised the bar when it comes to workplace health and safety. We want to hear them and we want to share them to inspire others! Share your story with us and you could win one of three cash prizes,” says Cook.

The Small Business Health and Safety Leadership Awards are not just about financial incentives; they aim to foster a culture of safety across all small businesses in Ontario. The judging criteria focus on various aspects, including safety culture and leadership, the implementation of safety programs or initiatives, effective communications, and active employee involvement in health and safety.

Last year, the competition saw 197 entries, indicating a strong engagement among small businesses in prioritizing health and safety.
